If your idea's already been done, how will your project be different? Why would a reader buy your e-book over someone else's? Write it. Just sit down and do it. I have no idea how long informational e-books usually are; I didn't worry about this when writing mine. I simply wrote it until I had no more to say.

Mine came in at 14, words, which, when converted into point font, became 62 pages. I wrote my guide in Scrivener , a program I already owned, but you can write in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or whatever works for you. I like Scrivener because it helps me organize and easily re-order my jumble of thoughts.

Part of writing an e-book is choosing a title. While I was in the midst of writing mine, I happened to read a post from author and traveler Chris Guillebeau, who advised against calling any informational product a book and instead suggested calling it a guide or manual or strategy.

It was because of this insight that I called my product a guide. Include links! Links greatly increase the value of e-books, just like they do blog posts. This is an easy way to direct the reader to more information, to provide additional value without having to include it in your project.

Move everything into Google Docs. If you're not using it already, that is. Get everything into a Google Doc, but don't convert it yet. That comes later. Change your fonts. The problem with Google Docs is it doesn't offer many choices for fonts. Since the reader will be seeing this on a screen, you want to use a larger-than-normal font. I went with point Georgia. My chapter titles are point Tahoma. Find fonts that are easy to read but also have a little personality.

Design a front page. You don't need anything fancy, at least for your first guide. Keep in mind that most people who see your cover, and those who are considering buying it, will see it as a small image. If you want something fancy, look for a designer that will do it on the cheap. This could be an excuse to try out Crowdspring or 99designs. Add a Table of Contents. Hold off on adding page numbers until you've formatted the book entirely.

Turn the document into a PDF so you can see any spacing issues. This is the one problem with my system that I never figured out how to fix effectively. This is tedious to fix because once you make one spacing change — adding or deleting a space — it throws off the rest of the document. I converted to PDF more than a dozen times during this phase and still had to go back each time to make spacing tweaks. There's got to be a better way to do this, but I haven't figured it out yet.

If you know a fix, hope you'll tell us about it in the comments! Add page numbers. Google Docs doesn't allow you to add page numbers, so you have to do this during the conversion process. Then add the page numbers to your Table of Contents. Convert to PDF a final time. While I only offered my e-guide in PDF, one reader did request another format. She wanted an epub file so she could read it on her eReader.

This is now on my to-do list. Choose a price. Informational e-books tend to sell for more than regular books; I give some examples in my launch post. Since this was my first go, I thought less about how much I needed to earn to make it worth my time and more about how much people would spend to get their hands on my work. Anyway, pick your price, because you'll need that for the next step. Join PayPal. I've already done that this month because my e-guide sales have exceeded that limit. There is a way to override this limit of course — or the platform would be useless for super successful sellers — and figuring out how to do that is on my to-do list. E-junkie offers a bunch of different options for how to sell, but I chose to upload my guide to the site.

When a buyer purchases the guide, e-junkie sends them an e-mail with the download link. That means the buyer gets it automatically, no wait. When I get a receipt of purchase from PayPal, I sometimes respond to it and ask the person where they heard about my guide. That helps me figure out where to target my marketing efforts. But I wonder if spending a week on an eBook for a lower price, which sold more, is a better investment of time. Writing an ebook is going to take a long time.

But breaking down into number of words and dividing them with the number of days, it seems to be do-able now. It is really incredible how this can possibly done. This was the early days of word processors being used — and she said she could read a manuscript and tell immediately if it had been edited on a computer screen or it had been printed out. The point of my response is that plans do not pan out for some. It comes down to routines not plans. This e-book has to be part of my daily routine. If you say the word plan or rules to a daydreamer they will run the other way.

I have a great idea now on how to make my own ebook! I found this post while searching for information on how to create an eBook. I was feeling a little overwhelmed until I came across your post. I am starting immediately! Kindle and Nook users are used to having access to a table of contents and other built-in tools which are part of those formats. Some ebooks are just. If you do want to create Kindle.

But in a hurry one day, I experimented with doing it the easy way. I was simultaneously dismayed and glad that it works. From what you both seem to saying this conversion can be done quite easily and, the premise that without these offers the end result could be poor formatting that turns readers off, is not a likely one after all. Am I right? As Ali has emphasized, the code can use a little cleanup, and you should always preview on a real Kindle or Nook, not just on the preview tools those formats provide.

And keep asking questions because if you can do this stuff yourself, you take even more control of the process. Either doing it yourself or hiring help is valid; it depends how comfortable you are with things like HTML code and using new software programs. I spent quite a while figuring out how to get things right when I did my first few ebooks into. So if I can provide not only this blog post, but resources to make ebook creation easier, I'm focusing on the right topic that will naturally lead to a sales conversation.

To get your creative juices flowing, here are some example ebook titles to consider. Note: Replace "x" with an appropriate number. You can also use our free Blog Topic Generator tool to come up with more ideas. Most blog topics can be made comprehensive enough to serve as longer form ebook topics. For this blog post, I'm going to use the PowerPoint version of template two from our collection of five free ebook templates.

Here are some key tips to keep in mind:. Our downloadable ebook templates are offered in both PowerPoint and InDesign. The key to making them fit well is to think of them as complementary to your writing.

Just be sure the quote or stat you're using genuinely adds value to the content. Whether you're emphasizing a quote or adding a visual, keep all your content within the same margins. If your copy is consistently one-inch indented on your page from both the left and right sides, keep your designed elements aligned using that same spacing. Think about how you got here — you clicked on a call-to-action CTA in an email, on a social media post, or somewhere else. A CTA is a link or visual object that entices the visitor to click and arrive on a landing page that will get them further engaged with your company.

Since your ebook readers have probably converted into leads in order to get their hands on your ebook to begin with more on this in step below , use the CTAs within your ebook to reconvert your readers and propel them further down your marketing funnel.

For instance, a CTA can lead to another offer, your annual conference's registration page, or even a product page. Depending on what this next action is, CTAs can be an in-line rectangle or a full-page teasing the next offer see both images below. We've even designed 50 customizable calls-to-action in PowerPoint you can download and use in your ebooks. You can grab them here. Now, we don't have a dedicated CTA template slide in the PowerPoint ebook templates for you to customize Once you've finished writing your ebook — CTAs and all — it's time to convert it to the right file type so it's transferable from you to your recipient.

Why can't you just attach what you have to a landing page and be done with it? Word documents, PowerPoints, and similar templates are perfect for creating your ebook, but not for delivering it. Because these templates are editable, the contents of your ebook are too easily corrupted, distorted, or even lost when moving from your computer to the hands of your future leads. That's where PDFs come in.

You've seen these letters at the end of files before. Short for Portable Document Format, the. PDF file type essentially freezes your ebook so it can be displayed clearly on any device. A popular alternative to PDFs is the. EPUB file type. Your ebook should be available for download through a landing page on your site. This is how you are able to convert your visitors into business leads that your sales team can ultimately follow up with.

For instance, you went through this landing page in order to access this ebook template. To learn more about how to optimize your landing pages for conversion, download this free ebook. Once your landing page is all set, you can use that destination URL to promote your ebook across your marketing channels.

In your ebook, describe what your client's challenge was, how you connected with them, and how you were able to help your client solve their challenge and become successful. The more complex your product is, the more information your customers will need to use it correctly. If your product or service can be used in multiple ways, or it's hard to set up alone, dedicate a brief ebook to showing people how it's done.

In the first section of your ebook, for example, explain how to launch your product or service. In the second section, break down the individual features and purposes your product is best used for. Interested in interviewing a well-known person in your market? Perhaps you've already sat down with an influencer to pick their brain about the future of the industry.

Package this interview into an ebook, making it easy for your customers to read and share your inside scoop. A "playbook" is a document people can use when taking on a new project or concept that is foreign to them.
